Overview
I have only owned two fountains in my lifetime. Both were in my latest home of 5 years. I used to have almost 2 acres of property, now I am down to an approximately 30 x 30 square foot patio! The patio is edged with a 3 foot flower garden and a third of the area is covered with a pergola upon which I hang baskets full of flowers, bird feeders, and wind chimes. I also wanted the calming sound of a fountain that would fit in a small garden.
This house was equipped with backyard outlets for fountains and lighting. Actually the previous owner had a fountain hooked up in the back, but it was in disrepair. The first fountain I purchased was much cheaper and did not last beyond a year. The finish eroded and peeled off, and the pump was continually getting clogged with leaves and other debris.
I decided to spend some more money on a quality fountain. That’s when I came across the Kenroy Home Serene Tiered Fountain.
This review will discuss the Serene Tiered Fountain, including pros and cons, and some tips as to how to keep it looking new and running for many years to come.
Product Qualities
This fountain is made of heavy ceramic with a light ivory glaze to help resist rust and discoloration. The pump is submerged at the base of the bottom tier and pushes water up through the stand to the circular finial at the top. The water then gently falls into the middle reservoir and then to the lower basin. The finial and bottom two basins feature a leaf motif.
The lower basin has an LED light which adds a subtle glow in the evening. The light switch and pump utilize separate power sources which gives you the option of using both the pump and the lighting or just the pump.
Both the pump and light cords extend 7 feet from the base of the fountain. If your power source is not close to the fountain, you can attach a multi-plug to an outdoor extension cord. The fountain should be connected to a grounded 110V outlet.
There is a separate on/off switch on the light cord.
Our outdoor outlet is connected to an indoor switch so it is easy to turn on and off from the inside.
The pump detects when the water level is low and will automatically turn itself off.
Care Instructions/Maintenance
Cleaning
If the fountain is placed in a shaded area, algae will grow on the sides. Simply add a little dishwashing detergent after you have swished out a lot of the water, and rub it with either a towel or soft brush to rid it of the algae. Remove the rest of the water from the basin, rinse with fresh water, and then refill with fresh water so your birds will not get sick when they take a sip.
Periodically use an acrylic brush with mild soap to clean the rest of the parts.
Winter Care
It is not recommended to keep the fountain outdoors if temperatures drop below 33 degrees Fahrenheit. To store in the winter:
drain all the water
disconnect all hoses, pumps and lights
thoroughly clean all components to prevent residue build-up
allow parts to dry
store in a weather free environment
Assembly
The fountain comes with very specific instructions which make it quite easy to assemble. The instructions have pictures and text.
There is a section for warnings and troubleshooting along with a frequently asked questions section.
Consider where to place the fountain. It should be within close proximity to an outlet. Also, the fountain should be placed on a firm, level surface.
My husband and I were actually able to assemble the fountain this spring without having to redo anything! This is a major feat for us! So, yes, it is quite easy to assemble.
A Couple of Negatives
The fountain should be placed in an area free of falling leaves, branches and debris. I placed our fountain under a crepe myrtle and have to frequently skim the droppings from the water and occasionally unclog the pump.
When we installed the pump that came with the fountain, it did not flow as well as it could have. In fact it had difficulty pushing the water up to the top of the fountain. Perhaps it was because we had not installed it properly. We eventually had to buy a more powerful pump and then it worked fine.
A little water does spill over the sides. Perhaps it is because we now have a more powerful pump.
Calming Effect of Water
Research has shown that the sound of water has a calming effect. Scientists believe the sound of running water guides the brain waves to a more calming state by triggering the parasympathetic system. This part of the nervous system lowers your blood pressure and heartrate, causing your body to relax.
This fountain has the gentle sound of a babbling brook. In addition to soothing you it helps muffle traffic sounds and other noises, especially in urban areas.
Price
The Serene Tiered Fountain by Kenroy Home is a bit pricey, however, I think it is worth it. With two seasons of use, the fountain has proven to be reliable. It runs well without any maintenance except for skimming the falling debris from plants, because we placed it in the wrong spot.
If you’re willing to put out the money, I think you will be pleased with this fountain.
Serene Tiered Fountain/ Review – Yea or Nay?
Given the positive features of this fountain, I believe it will be a good purchase. Yes, the original pump was a bit tricky, but perhaps I did not clean the pump properly. (I usually like to take shortcuts, to my detriment!)
The stated pros and cons account for the rating of 4.8 out of 5, with 1 being “meh” not worth it, and 5 being excellent.
